Supervision

Integrative relationship-based supervision.

Why the focus on relationship?
All the recent research has shown that a good supervisory alliance is the most important element for effective supervision in the same way that a good relationship between client and counsellor is for therapeutic change.  Supervisees, especially early on in their training, can feel very vulnerable and exposed in supervision.  It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the process and to feel that you have chosen the wrong career.  A good relationship can help you through these difficulties and support you until you feel more stable and confident.

What happens in supervision?

We start with a check-in to find out how the supervisee is feeling generally at this period of their personal life.  This will obviously have an impact on your work.  We work towards a contract during the session – what is it that the supervisee would like to focus on.

We aim to
  1. Develop understanding and skills within the work.
  2. Give information and another perspective concerning the work
  3. Explore both content and process.
  4. Validate the supervisee as a person and as a counsellor.
  5. Ensure that the supervisee is not left with difficulties, problems and projections.
  6. Provide a space to explore and express personal distress which may be encountered in the transference or counter-transference.
  7. Enable the supervisee to plan and utilize personal and professional resources and creativity.
  8. Enable the supervisee to be pro-active, rather than re-active.
  9. Ensure the quality of work.
